My Story

My Training

When I was pregnant with my daughter who is now four, I worked as a labor and delivery nurse.  I was surrounded by a community of nurses and family who loved me and gave me all the support a woman could want or need. However, all the love and support did not prepare me for my labor journey. When my pregnancy took me to nearly 42 weeks, my husband and I had to make a decision for the health of our unborn child, an induction of labor. I knew this to be a safe option, had helped hundreds of women who had successful inductions, but was nervous none the less. I had prepared myself for this path as the 40th and then 41st week passed and knew I was making the best choice that I could. What I didn't prepare myself for was the turn my path would take that I couldn't foresee. My daughter was in distress before an induction could be started, before my labor had even begun. My ideals about a "perfect" birth slipped quickly through my fingers as I was being prepared for an emergent cesarean birth. How could I be a midwife, my dream, if I didn't have a vaginal non-medicated "natural" birth? How could I encourage mothers to have the strength they need to get through their birth when I hadn't experienced my own? It took me a while, a lot longer than I would have wished, to realize that women need to feel empowered regardless of their birth story, regardless of a non-medicated, medicated , or cesarean birth. Each pregnancy, labor, and birth are unique. All are memorable and should be shareable birth stories. My husband and I made a choice that was best for our child, one that led me to a beautiful healthy girl and to the path that I am on today. I want to ensure that all mothers feel like they have a say in their birth story. I want women to feel empowered with the best evidence so that they can, at the end of their birth, and the start of their parenting journey, know that they advocated for themselves and be proud. Proud of their birth, proud of their story, and proud of the choices they made to get there.
